The canals of Xochimilco


Trajineras, colorful flat-bottomed boats ply the canals of Xochimilco, in the south of Mexico City. Once most of the Valle de México was a shallow lake dotted with islands and the canals were the main arteries of communication. Now Xochimilco is one of the last remaining vestiges of this ancient water-world.
