Trees of Life – “Arboles de la Vida”
Mexican Trees of Life are elaborate clay tree structures often depicting Biblical scenes such as Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden or Noah’s Ark.
Each artisan creates their own design and some paint them in vivid colors such as these arboles de vida from Metepec, Estado de México. Pre-Hispanic ceramic trees existed and when the Spaniards arrived, the Catholic priests used the idea to teach the Bible stories to the natives. Today such trees are sold as popular folk art items and may also be in the shape of a cross or represent different themes other than the original ones, such as Day of the Dead or cultural aspects.
