A mural destroyed and re-painted
Two schoolgirls look at Diego Rivera’s mural “Man, Controller of the Universe” inside the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.
Rivera had originally started painting this mural at New York City’s Rockefeller Centre under the title of “Man at the Crossroads” but it had been destroyed before completion because he had included Lenin in the artwork and refused to take him out. He later reproduced the mural in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in 1934.
The mural depicts a man directing a huge machine at the crossroads of the political ideologies of that period: capitalism to the man’s right and communism to his left.
