Photo Walk Nº29 – Pilgrims at the Basilica
Our 29th Photo Walk was a special one on Sunday morning to photograph the pilgrims at the Basilica de Guadalupe. Since the Day of the Virgen de Guadalupe (December 12th) is coming up shortly, people from all over Mexico are already arriving at the Basilica to celebrate and honor her with their dances.
Despite the rather misty weather, we were able to get lots of shots of the pilgrims carrying their statues of the Virgen, dancers from different part of the country performing their dances and talked with two groups who had spent the last three weeks cycling from Campeche and Jalisco with large statues on their backs.
There was time to go into the New and Old Basilica, see the famous “tilma” or cloak with the image of the Virgen de Guadalupe on it and climb up to the top of Tepeyac Hill and look down on the Basilicas and the massive square below. Thousands of pilgrims were flocking to the site and there was a very happy atmosphere at the complex with families and whole communities enjoying the day.
