Domingo de Ramos – blessing of the palms
Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday), one week before Easter Sunday, marks the start of Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Mexico. Churches are decorated and people take palms along to have them blessed by the priest with holy water. They do this to celebrate the story of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem when the crowds waved palm branches. In some towns and villages, there are processions re-enacting the Easter story.
