Photo Walk with kids – Desierto de los Leones
“I-Spy with my camera” in an old monastery in the mountains
Desierto de los Leones is a great place to take the family for an outing close to Mexico City. Hidden among the dense forests in this national park is an old Monastery, the ex-Convento del Desierto de los Leones, a magical place full of legends and mysteries and even tunnels and so-called ghosts. Once inhabited by the Carmelite monks, during the Mexican War of Independence it was used as military barracks and later abandoned for many years. Today it is restored and has a museum and restaurant.
On this photo walk, the boys explored the buildings and gardens with their cameras and tried to find everything on a check-list which ranged from taking photos of archways, snails and looking through a window, to finding circles, squares, horizontal lines and interesting shadows.
We had a fun morning and managed to tick off most of the items on the check-list before they disappeared to a nearby food stand outside for quesadillas.
